HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA – (January 17, 2012) – Billabong Girls team rider Frankie Harrer, 14, has broken the record for the most victories ever in a single National Scholastic Surfing Association competition season.
The Malibu, California resident captured wins Number 30 and 31 last weekend at the NSSA Explorer event in Huntington Beach, besting the previous record of 30 set by Kanoa Igarashi in 2009. With several contests remaining on the schedule Harrer looks to add to her historic tally in the coming months.
“I am really excited that I broke the record, because it was my goal for this year and it feels really good to have achieved it,” said Harrer before flying to Hawaii for yet another competition. “It has also really helped my surfing doing so many heats. I want to thank all my sponsors: Billabong, Von Zipper, Sex Wax,
Channel Islands Surf Shop and Daphne’s Greek food. I also want to thank my parents and coach Mike Lamm for supporting me and the NSSA for making everything possible.”
Widely regarded as the top female surfer in California in her age group, the 5'3" Harrer tips the scales at a mere 99 lbs. yet has proven her mettle alongside some of the world’s top male surfers in a variety of powerful waves. In addition to her astonishing competitive record, Harrer has already gained media acclaim for her gutsy surfing on photo trips to Indonesia and Fiji.
“We are extremely proud of Frankie’s accomplishment!” cheered Megan Villa, Billabong Girls Team Manager. “She set a goal and worked hard all year to accomplish it. She has grown so much as a surfer and a person over the past few years and we are very excited to see what the future holds for her.”
The perennial proving ground for the top youth surfers in America, the NSSA also requires competitors to uphold academic standards. Harrer, a mere 8th grader, has maintained a steady 4.0 grade point average amid a hectic surf contest schedule. Her amazing string of victories has made a significant impression on an organization that has seen virtually every great American pro surfer pass through its ranks since 1978.
“Not only has it been exciting to witness Frankie’s momentous run to make history, it has also been great to see how much she has improved with the experience, said Janice Aragon, the NSSA’s Executive Director. “She has clearly stepped up her game this season through the knowledge and skill she has gained to perform in a variety of surf conditions. And she is not going to stop at 31. She is taking advantage of the opportunity with the focus and determination of winning as many as she can. All of us at the NSSA are very proud of the brilliant season she has put together.”
